Due to Weather Heart Run 2008 has been cancelled

After extensive consultation with community members, event organizers, university officials and volunteers, it is with deep regret that the American Heart Association has decided to cancel the 2008 Anchorage Heart Run, presented by the Alaska Heart Institute.

The goal of the Heart Run this year, as it has been each and every year in the events 30 year history, has been to raise lifesaving funds for the American Heart Association. The event is a celebration for the community, to bring residents together, to stand united in our fight against the No. 1 and No. 3 killers in America – heart disease and stroke. The funds raised through the Heart Run truly make a difference – across the nation and right here in Anchorage. The Heart Run donations help fund life-saving research and programs to bring awareness and save lives.

Although the event will not be held in 2008, the association encourages everyone involved in the race to continue to honor its goals, to continue to run, to walk more, eat better and live longer. The Heart Run is a call for a new beginning, a day of renewed hope. As all of you know, the Heart Run is held as a result of a lot of special people committed to our mission and who have worked very hard to make the day possible. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the event was not held. But to those who worked tirelessly to make it happen, and the community partners such as Alaska Heart Institute, Providence Alaska Medical Center, and The Alaska Club, we recognize each and every one of you. You are truly the backbone of this movement and we couldn’t have come this far without you. It is through your efforts that we are able to save lives.

While organizers have received strong community support and don’t anticipate a large number of individuals requesting refunds, those that do wish to receive a refund must make that request by 5-9-08. All refund requests need to be received in person or postmarked no later than 5-9-08. In addition, any participants requesting a refund must return their bib and chip to the American Heart Association office located at:

We sincerely hope that runners will consider their fees a donation to the association so that it can continue to fund its mission.
